Sabic Innovative Plastics, Spain - phenolic chemical

Circumstance of the accident : An operator was carrying out heat insulation work on April 19, 2010, and when he leaned over to try to reach a pipe to clean it, was splashed with a drop of chemical from the high part of the cistern on which he was working. In spite of wearing the corresponding PPE, including safety goggles, a drop of a phenolic chemical fell on him, slid down his cheek and into his right eye, causing an intense burning sensation. He came to the medical department very quickly, given the short distance which separated the accident site from the clinic, and I would evaluate the medical management time to be less than 2 minutes. Ocular washing with the DIPHOTERINE® solution was performed, with the entire eyewash, until a symptomatic improvement was reached, since the employee felt an improvement and relief during washing. Once washing was finished, he was treated with ocular healing ointment and was sent to have a consultation with an ophthalmologist, following an industrial accident without after-effects and not resulting in any sick leave. Evaluation of the results: The subjective and objective valorisations of the obtained results were clearly satisfactory, and the following day the operator returned to his workplace, without any type of discomfort or lesion.
