Interview with Damien Poirot (Beurrière d’Isigny): ‘Diphoterine® is definitely quicker than water!’

Interviewed by Adrien Mathieu

Packaging coordinator and safety officer at Beurre d’Isigny, Damien Poirot tells us how Diphoterine® solution has found its place in his company.

Prevor: What do you do in your company?
Damien Poirot: I’m the packaging and safety coordinator, my work is 50% machines and 50% staff safety and prevention.

Prevor: What chemicals are present on site?
DP: We have everything here: acids, industrial products of all kinds, sodium, laboratory products, and fat.

Prevor: Are accidents common in your department?
DP: It depends on the year; last year there weren’t many but we had a major case in 2017 with a pretty serious burn. However, the protocol wasn’t correctly followed, sodium splashes were the cause but by the time the accident victim got to the Diphoterine® shower it was too late. It didn’t have the desired effect.

Prevor: When did you first find out about Diphoterine® solution?
DP: It must have been over ten years ago: we learned how to use it on the skin and eyes. If the protocol is followed, it works really well: we had two accidents on the same day within two hours of each other in 2019; the protocol was correctly followed, and there were no marks or sequelae afterwards.

“When you have Diphoterine® on hand and apply it, it immediately takes the pain away.”

Prevor: What benefits immediately come to mind?
DP: When you have it on hand and apply it, it immediately takes the pain away. I’m a first aider. Every time I’ve had to use it on my colleagues, there have never been any problems, both for eyes and skin.

Prevor: What’s the protocol in place?
DP: If they can, the employee should rinse with water and then apply Diphoterine® solution. We don’t have a station, everyone has a bottle of Diphoterine® on them. I had three workers splashed by a sodium leak, I rinsed everyone, and the effects were immediate. there was nothing afterwards, not even a doctor’s appointment.

Prevor: How is healing after using Diphoterine®?
DP: People treated in time, following the protocol, had no sequelae. After an hour, there were no marks on the skin.

Prevor: Is Diphoterine® more mobile than water?
DP: It’s definitely faster: there are stations in different parts of the factory, we go and get what we need straight away, and it takes between 30 seconds and a minute. If the person calls us straight away and we rinse with water and then Diphoterine®, it’s faster. Otherwise, we undress them directly under the shower; we have safety showers in each workshop.

Prevor: Are they treated at the hospital afterwards?
DP: If the eyes are impacted, we automatically send the person to an eye specialist, and unless we see that a large portion of skin has been damaged, we don’t call the emergency services (for large red patches, we refer the person to a dermatologist).

Prevor: Have you had an incident involving the eyes of a worker?
DP: We applied a bottle of Diphoterine® and after wash in their eyes. There have never been any sequelae except for one person who used two bottles and their eye was excessively dry afterwards. He had to soak it and then re-apply Diphoterine®.
