Sabic Innovative Plastics, Spain - phenol water vapour

Circumptance of the accident: An employee who usually carries out operations in the decanting area of chemical tanks, commonly phenol, for which he uses a suit, goggles and a helmet with an adapted visor. While he was performing a tank opening operation with water vapour, a splash of the chemical mixed with water vapour suddenly occurred and splashed under the visor. This splash was maybe involving phenol. The washing protocol was immediately put in place, with a water washing and the application of PEG, and then he went to the medical department. The splashes had as a consequence the effect of multiple burns in the form of drops, potentially thermal burns by water steam, without any odour of phenol. All burns were first degree, without affecting the eyes or eyelids, but very diffuse. We directly started a 200 ml of the DIPHOTERINE® solution washing and the complete package was used, obtaining a symptomatic improvement for the patient, but the burn injuries sustained. Given the extent of the affected area, a water washing was performed for 20 minutes, obtaining a temperature decrease of the affected skin. In the end, we obtained a relative improvement and we applied ointment for burns, Silvederma, on the whole surface. Evaluation of the results: Three days after the accident, the recovery was very significative, without showing skin lesions. The damaged skin areas were fully regenerated, some still red, but without sequelaes. Dr Juan Carlos Rueda Garrido Occupational Doctor
