Where does the specific hazard of the hydrofluoric acid (HF) come from ?
|
Hydrofluoric acid entails a double action :
- corrosive due to the acid ions (H+), that are able to attack the tissues on the surface ( corneal epithelium or epidermis ),
- toxic due to the ions (F-), that will permit a penetration in depth thanks to the destruction of the superficial layer of the skin or the eye, and will be able to chelate the calcium by disturbing the biological balances entailing physiological disturbances more or less deep;
Interest of an active rinsing with Hexafluorine®
Because of this specific hazard, an efficient rinsing, in addition of the mechanical swipping effect, must permit very quick and simultaneously :
- to stop the progression of the aggressive agent that has penetrated into the tissues
- to remove the product thanks to the osmotic pressures
- to absorb all the aggressive potential of the chemical product ( H+ and F- )
These three properties will constitute the notion of active rinsing. These 3 assembled criteria will permit an optimal decontamination
A sole molecule worldwide meet these three expectations :
Developped by the Prevor Laboratory, Hexafluorine® was created to permit an active rinsing in case of splashes with hydrofluoric acid; its action mechanism is multiple.
1- Hexafluorine® is a liquid that eliminates the aggressive chemical product remained on the surface thanks to its sweeping effect
2- Hexafluorine® properties permit to absorb acid ions ( H+) and fluoride ions ( F-) very quick and simultaneously .
Its chelating power on these ions is 100 times higher than calcium gluconate chelating power ( antidote classically used on burns due to hydrofluoric acid ).
3-Like Diphotérine®, Hexafluorine® is hypertonic that permits to stop the progression of fluoride ions and thus to contribute to the total decontamination of the splash.
The combination of these different properties permits Hexafluorine®, when it is used immediatelly, to decontaminate optimally the splash due to hydrofluoric acid and to avoid the terrible sequelae so many time noticed during this kind of splashes ( amputation, important surgery and death of the injured person caused by a heart attack ).
